A Little Bit Of Art Deco Glamour.
The next riad that I have discovered has just opened here in Marrakech, it’s in a chain of four dotted around Marrakech, and all under the umbrella name of Riad Lotus my favorite of the four is the “The Perle.” Being mad about interiors I just adore this little piece of movie star glamour in the middle of the medina. The Dutch designer Antoine Van Doorne has a very distinct style which harks back to the 30s and 40’s Art Deco Period. He has been decorating in his flamboyant style in Marrakech for around 10 years; he was a bit of a pioneer and is well known on the party scene down here. His style is immediately recognizable using a mix of beautiful antiques from his favorite period, pop art and beautiful Moroccan hand woven and embroidered fabrics. He isn’t afraid to use rich dark colors on walls, which he lifts with his well chosen accessories.Since I met him I have been keeping tabs on his work via all the beautiful interior design magazines that are published here, he is often commissioned to do private houses and I am convinced that he has an obsession with furniture legs. Even the most boring bits of iron furniture, are always constructed with the most beautiful legs. This style really works in Marrakech as it in captures a period in Marrakech history when this city first became known as a glamorous holiday destination.
