D’Jemaa el Fna Prepares for The Marrakech Film Festival.
For any one whos familliar with D’jemaa el Fna Square of Marrakech will know that once a year for a few short days it becomes a cinema. Princes, movie stars and movie directors from all over the world arrive to honor Marrakech with their presence, and as a fabulous gift to the inhabitants of Marrakech huge screens are erected all over our town so we can keep up with whats going on in the world of International movie making.
How lucky we are. This is our 8th consecutive year of the film festival and this year we will have Russian and Egyption directors works showcased with work from the Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky, and films directed by the late Egyptian director Youssef Chahine. Egyptian movies (and television, especially their soaps) are much loved here in Morocco.
The festival will also honour two of Hollywood’s leading ladies, Sigourny Weaver and Michelle Yeo, who my husband and boys adore for her early rolls in kung fu movies.
The Festival officially begins on the 14th of November and finishes on the 22nd. So if your in town this week head down to the D’jemaa el Fna with your popcorn for movie night with the rest of Marrakech.
