The Andy Warhol of Marrakech.

Since I have been wandering around in the Medina for weeks, I would like to share with you. some of the people that I have met in Marrakech and show you some of the really artistic places around. I Would like to begin with this designer that I met a while ago in London his name is Hassan Hajjaj they call him the “Andy Warhol of Marrakech” He is a really exceptionally imaginative person, He was born in Morocco but lived in London as a teenager, hung out in New York for a while had a chill out Moroccan tea cafe in Camden near the market. (Which was great when your little legs got tired from all that shopping?) He also did some really cool clothes and accessories, I loved the T Shirts the most and that’s when I first got tuned into him as an artist.Pop art in Moroccan style is just so cool; he uses all the every day stuff and their logos, just like Andy Wahol did with the campballs soup but using Moroccan brands. Now he has branched out into having a little hotel in the medina called Raid Yima, where he has his art in all-sorts of unexpected places on the walls on cupboard doors and in the furniture and has poured all his creative energy into the decorating of the place, it has to be one of the funkiest little places in town with loads of retro patterned fabrics mixed in with the Moroccan tiles and the brightly colored tadelakt. He has just exhibited “Nous Nous” in Dubai’s third line gallery which is a collection of photos and other stories from morocco. I really hope he will bring his work back to Marrakech so that I get a chance to see it.
