Lalla Takerkoust or The Lake Near Marrakech
Lalla Takerkoust is around 40 kms from Marrakech and if you’re planning a spring break here it should be in your top ten places to visit.
During the spring this natural lake stores the water that trickles down from the mountains as the snow melts. It slowly feeds into the rivers that flow into Marrakech….. By the end of summer/ beginning of the fall the lake is at its lowest ….Until the first autumn rains and winter snow falls and the cycle begins again.
Every winter we all look to the snow on those mountains to gage what kind of year we are going to have in the way of water in this desert kingdom of Morocco…
This is a favorite weekend haunt for the Marrakchis. Picnics by the lake during the spring and summer months are a welcome respite from city life.
If you don’t have time to make a picnic there are thankfuly just a few restaurants scattered around the lake that blend beautifully with their natural surroundings. My favourite is…
This open air restaurant has a very laid back feel, with space for the kids to run wild and explore while the parents chill out under the straw gazebo style shades and admire the scenery…..
The restaurant serves 2 set menus which are sourced from local produce……. 3 courses for 170dhs….. it’s great value.
If you book in advance you can take out the Relais du Lac’s boat and spend the afternoon floating on the calm waters of the lake….
After lunch, take a stroll along the banks of the lake and delight in the dramatic views and fantastic fresh mountain air.If you decide you need some extra time to explore the area further, the Relais du Lac offers its auberge and excellent camping facilities…
You can take a Grand Taxi from Marrakech and follow the Amizmiz road out of town until you reach the village of Lalla Takerkoust ….. After that just follow the signs….
and to book at night at their auberge or a night camping under the starry skies click here
