Play it Again Sam, Ricks Cafe Casablanca
This week we have had a special visitor here in Marrakech, it’s my baby sis who’s come to celebrate her 30th birthday. Being born on Valentine’s day she decided to spend her big 3 0 in romantic Marrakech. After a very hectic weekend I was forced to go back to work which meant a trip up to Casablanca. So when she heard the name Casablanca (like almost everyone else) she started to rattle on about the Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman Film Casablanca…….
So I just knew the perfect place for us to visit on our trip to the big smoke….
Several years ago Kathy Kriger a former U.S. diplomat and entrepreneur from Portland, Oregon realised while working in Casablanca that there was no reference to the infamous “Ricks Cafe” from the film Casablanca. So deciding she wished to settle in Casablanca and thinking this would be a fun tourist project she set about raising funds and then re creating this stunning replica of Ricks Cafe from the 1942 film set. Perched above Casablanca’s port and just inside the Medina walls Kathy transformed this old riad into a stunning bar and restaurant.
At Ricks Cafe you can soak up the atmosphere in the Moorish arched alcoves, sit among the palms that cast their subtle shadows on the white washed walls and hum along to the old classic melodies from the movie played by their very own Sam the piano player every evening.
Luckily though the crowd has changed, the black marketers and gamblers have left town…….
and there’s no longer a risk of sudden gunfire shots………………
You can however after dinner retire to the second floor 40’s style salon, where you can recap on all those golden moments from this Oscar winning film……..
The restaurant is just about to celebrate its fifth year of rave reviews, and welcomes guests for lunch or dinner. Ricks Cafe loves to celebrate all things so if you have a special event planned, Ricks Cafe will be happy to help. Don’t forget to check out the website before you go for any up and coming events.
You will find Ricks Cafe at
248 Boulevard Sour Jdid, Place du Jardin Public, Ancienne Medina
